A parent is admitted to Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital on 36th Street in Vero Beach, or to Orlando Health Sebastian River Hospital on US-1 in Sebastian. From there, many go on to a short rehabilitation stay: inpatient rehabilitation at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Treasure Coast on 37th Street, or skilled nursing and short-term rehab at Palm Garden of Vero Beach, Vero Beach Care Center or Sea Breeze Rehab and Nursing Center.

Those buildings sit within a few blocks of each other along 36th and 37th Street, the stretch people here call Medical Mile. Inside them, the care is coordinated and the staffing is covered. The gap opens on the day someone comes home.

Discharge planning moves quickly, and families are often given a day or two of notice. That is why we hold to a start within 24 hours. A discharge date is not a plan, and the first week at home is when falls, missed medications and readmissions happen.

Private duty home care runs $30 to $40 per hour, with a four-hour daily minimum. Where you land depends on the level of care and the hours you schedule.
